Peru is located in a seismically active region, and earthquakes can occur without warning. Most are minor, but knowing what to do during stronger shaking can help you stay safe.

If you are traveling in Peru, stay calm and follow these basic safety recommendations.

During an Earthquake

• Stay calm. Do not run or push others.
• Move away from windows, glass, shelves, and objects that could fall.
• If you are indoors, move to a safe area and Drop, Cover, and Hold On: drop to your hands and knees, protect your head and neck, and hold on until the shaking stops.
• Do not use elevators.
• If you are outdoors, stay away from buildings, walls, power lines, trees, and anything that could fall.
• If you are on a tour, stay with your group and follow your guide’s instructions.

After the Earthquake

Once the shaking has stopped, remain calm and move to a safe area or designated meeting point if instructed to evacuate.

• Be prepared for possible aftershocks.
• Do not enter buildings that appear damaged or have been declared unsafe.
• Be alert for hazards such as broken glass, falling debris, exposed electrical wires, or gas leaks.
• Use your phone only when necessary. When possible, use text messages or messaging apps instead of calls to help keep communication networks available.
• Always follow information and instructions from official authorities, local emergency services, your guide, or hotel staff.

If You Are Near the Coast

If you are near the ocean and experience a strong or prolonged earthquake, move away from the coast and toward higher ground or a designated evacuation area once the shaking stops.

If you notice the sea suddenly receding or behaving unusually, move inland or to higher ground immediately. Do not wait for an official tsunami warning.
